Japanese, Korean bets dominate ITF J30 Manila Leg 1

MANILA – Unseeded Japanese Aoi Ishizaki bagged the boys’ singles title after beating compatriot Shun Munetoh, 7-5, 6-2, in the final of the ITF J30 Manila first leg at Rizal Memorial Tennis Center hardcourt in Manila on Sunday.

Ishizaki then teamed up with Kango Endoh to secure the doubles title over Munetoh and Rentaro Otaka, 6-4, 6-3.

The 15-year-old Ishizaki will move on to the second leg starting Tuesday.

Ishizaki ousted No. 3 Ariyaphol Leekul of Thailand (quarterfinals) and No. 6 compatriot Kuranosuke Suzuki (semifinals), while Munetoh, who entered the main draw as a qualifier, stunned No. 4 Napat Pattanalertphan of Thailand (quarters) and No. 2 Ruochen Gao of China (semis).

Meanwhile, No. 2 Park Seojin of South Korea pulled off a 6-4, 6-3 win over top seed Yi-Ching Huang of Chinese Taipei to secure the girls’ singles crown.

“Park played very well. She has a solid forehand,” the 18-year-old Huang, a member of the Under-16 national team, said.

Huang also has three previous doubles titles this year.

“This is her last tournament in the ITF Juniors and she gave her best out there,” Rau Gau Yu, who has been coaching Huang for seven years, said.

In the girls’ doubles final, third seeds Paweenon Nualsri of Thailand and Ying Chi Chloe Wong of Hong Kong prevailed over fourth seeds Wang Jiayi and Xu Yishan of China, 6-2, 6-3. (PNA)
