3×3 Basketball: Philippines sweeps golds

SAN JUAN CITY, Philippines–The Philippines captured both the two gold medals at stake in the Southeast Asian Games 3×3 basketball event at the FilOil Flying V Centre here on Monday.

The Philippine women’s team had to grind it out in the end to beat Thailand, 17-13, while the men’s team had a smooth cruise to the gold with a 21-9 rout of Indonesia.

Afril Bernardino sparked the game turning 13-2 blast that helped Gilas Women pull away from Thailand, which still tried to come back in the end but to no avail.

Bernardino finished with 11 points for Gilas Women, who actually bounced back from 20-22 loss to the same Thai squad in their last pool stage match.

Warunee Kitraksa paced silver medalist Thailand with five markers.

Malaysia captured the bronze after pummeling Vietnam, 21-7, in the battle for third.

On the other hand, Gilas Men pulled off a 14-3 rally to turn their men’s final against Indonesia into a blowout and complete a full 8-0 sweep of the tournament.

CJ Perez scored Gilas Men’s first four points and ended up with 10.

Itun Surliyadin paced Indonesia with three markers.
