AboitizLand Football Cup to kick off Oct. 13

LIPA, Batangas — New name; new game.

This is the catchphrase for the 21st season of the tournament formerly known as the Aboitiz Cup.

Now known as the AboitizLand Football Cup, the longest-running grassroots football tournament series is making some huge amendments aside from the name as a new decade of existence begins.

Aside from the new name, the AboitizLand Football Cup will also have a new format as the tournament, which will run from Oct. 13-Dec. 8, will be played in a seven-a-side format.

“The reason why we switched to sevens is because we want to accommodate more teams. We want a more festive atmosphere,” said former college football star Rely San Agustin, whose RSA Una Group is partnering with AboitizLand Inc. for the event.

The press launch was held at the Ippon Yari Restaurant at the grandstand of the Aboitiz Pitch here, the site of the Luzon leg of the tournament series.

The cup begins with the boy under-15 event on Oct. 13, but on the following Saturday, the much-anticipated men’s open tournament will commence.

On Nov. 9, the mixed open tournament will take place.

This time as well, the season will start with the Lipa stop before heading back to the Cup’s usual battleground, the Cebu City Sports Center, for the final leg
