Bacolod City honors homegrown 30th SEA Games medalists

BACOLOD CITY — City officials here, led by Mayor Evelio Leonardia, paid tribute to homegrown athletes who have brought honor to the Philippines in the ongoing 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.

“We pride ourselves as the city of champions. We have to give them special recognition,” Leonardia said.

On Friday, the mayor met with Debbie Mahinay, a silver medalist in Breaking B-Girls category of the dancesport event, during her courtesy call at the Bacolod City Government Center.

Mahinay, who hails from Barangay Bata, was joined by her trainers Brylle Sy and Jake Louwen Benamer.

On Wednesday, the City Council also lauded Mahinay and fellow dancesport medalists from Bacolod, couple Michael Angelo Marquez, and Stephanie Sabalo, for their achievements in the regional games.

“Their amazing efforts in the said events are remarkable and did not only captivate the eyes of the judges and the audience but also bolstered the medal tally of the Philippines at the onset of the competition,” said the council resolution authored by Councilor Simplicia Distrito.

Marquez, whose parents Michael and Jossette Marquez are residents of Barangay 14 here, together with wife Sabalo, won the gold medals in both the Open Latin and the single dance pasa doble, as well as the silver in single dance jive.

The dancesport competition was held at the Royce Hotel in Clark, Pampanga on December 1. (PNA)
