LAS VEGAS — Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez tipped the scales at a ripped 168 pounds on Friday afternoon for his super middleweight unification bout against Caleb Plant.
Plant, an American from Las Vegas via Tennessee came in at 167 pounds during the official weigh-in at MGM Grand Garden Arena where both fighters will duel on Saturday night.
As he attempts to become only the sixth boxer and the first of Latino heritage to become a unified champion in the four-belt era, Canelo promised a victory against a foe he thought had disrespected him.
“It’s good to fight angry. You just need to be smart to do it, ” the red-haired brawler told Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports.
The odds makers are leaning heavily on Canelo emerging as the victor, too.
The 31-year old Alvarez, who wields a 56-1-2 record with 38 KOs, is an enormous 10-1 favorite to seize Plant’s IBF version of the 168-pound title.
But Plant, who is only 29 years old and holds an unbeaten mark of 21-0 with 12 KOs, is confident of an upset.
“There have been a lot of guys in my position. A guy who doesn’t have a big name on his record and they step up and face the guy. They said the same thing about them that they’re saying about me now. But then they step up and beat the guy, you know?”
