DAVAO CITY — Southpaw Michael “Captain Barbel” Mendoza knocked out Stevanus Nana Bau of Indonesia to win the World Boxing Foundation International Flyweight title on Saturday at Pili Capitol Convention Center in Pili, Camarines Sur.
The 21-year-old native of Pili, Camarines Sur stopped Bau right in the first opening round to post his 11th victory, including 4 knockouts, against one defeat and two draws.
Bau absorbed his 12th defeated in 24 fights.
Mendoza had three wins in 2019 including the unanimous decision over Vincent Bautista of Bohol to win the vacant Philippine Boxing Federation flyweight title at San Fernando City on March 22.
He also won his first fight outside the country last year, pulling out a unanimous victory against Japanese Kento Yabusaki at Karakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan.
Meanwhile, Al “Catain A” Sabaupan, another fighter from Camarines Sur, also knocked out Ray Rahardjo of Indonesia in the third round of their lightweight’s eight-rounder.
Sabaupan improved his ring record to 26-3-1 while Rahardjo suffered his 14th loss with only six wins and five draws.
