LOS ANGELES — Canelo Alvarez has been on the prowl for a rematch opportunities following his recent victory over British fighter John Ryder last month.
The Mexican star wanted to face Dmitry Bivol, the 175-pound champion who defeated him last year, but that didn’t pan out.
Next, the immensely popular undisputed 168-pound champion considered a catchweight bout at 180 pounds against the 200-pound titlist Badou Jack, but that one also fell through.
Now, Canelo’s focus has shifted to an enticing showdown with the undefeated two-division world champion and reigning 160-pound titleholder, known as “Hitman” Jermall Charlo, boasting a flawless record of 32-0 with 20 knockouts.
This match holds promise and might just materialize.
The potential clash between Canelo, aged 32, and Charlo, aged 33, for the undisputed 168-pound championship could potentially take place in Las Vegas on Mexico’s Independence Day, which falls on September 16.
Eddie Hearn, the British promoter and head of Matchroom Boxing, weighed in on this intriguing possibility, stating, “I think the Jermall Charlo fight is currently the frontrunner. I spoke with Eddy Reynoso, Canelo’s manager and coach, last week. They initially wanted to face Bivol, but we couldn’t make that happen, so we’re exploring other options.”
As time ticks away, and with Canelo in need of an opponent for the significant Mexican holiday in September, the likelihood of Jermall Charlo being Canelo Alvarez’s next adversary is growing.
Canelo versus Charlo shapes up as one of the blockbuster bouts of the year.
