Dancesports: Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia share gold medal haul

December 1, 2019 – Three nations share the golds on the Dancesports event of the 2019 Southeast Asian Games which takes place inside the Royce Hotel in Mabalacat, Pampanga.

The Philippines get 10 medals in the event, getting five each from Latin American and Modern Standard categories.

The tandem of Mark Jayson Gayon and Mary Joy Renigen grabbed the gold in Foxtrot and Waltz, while Sean Mischa Aranar and Ara Leonila Nualla took three from Viennese Waltz, Tango, and Five Dance Categories.

Wilbert Aunzo and Pearl Marie Caneda take three medals for the Philippines in Cha Cha Cha, Rumba, and Samba.

Partners Michael Angelo Marquez and Stephanie Sabalo meanwhile added two more in the Paso Doble and Five Dance categories.

The Vietnamese pair of Nguyen Duc Hoa and Nguyen Thi Hai Yen reigned supreme in the Quickstep category while also hauling two silvers in Tango and Viennese Waltz.

Nguyen Doan Minh Truong and Nguyen Trong Nha Uyen secured the gold for Vietnam in the Jive category together with their two silvers in Samba and Five Dance.

Malaysia’s Sam Jee Lek was hailed the champion in the men’s breakdance category, beating Vietnam’s Le Huu Phuoc and Singapore’s Jeremy Sim.

No medal was awarded in the women’s breakdance as only two competitors vie for the top spot with Indonesia’s Dewi Desnaya and Philippines’ Debbie Mahinay being the contenders.
