Football: Vietnam wins 1st men’s gold as unified country vs. Indonesia

December 10, 2019 – The Rizal Memorial Football Stadium goes loud as Vietnam gets the first men’s football gold medal as a unified country on Tuesday.

It was a rematch of the group stage game between the two, with the Vietnamese side coming back from a 0-1 deficit to win 2-1.

The finals match was a different story, however, as Vietnam pulled a 3-0 thumping over their Indonesian counterparts.

Doan Van Hau, who plays for Eredivisie side SC Heerenveen, scored the icebreaker for Vietnam in the 39th minute off a beautiful kick that went past goalkeeper Nadeo Argawinata’s defense.

Ha Noi FC’s Do Hung Dung added another goal in the 59th minute which sent Indonesia’s gold medal hopes slowly fading.

Argawinata deflected the set-piece in the 73rd minute but found the wrong man as Doan easily put the ball on the back of the net.

South Korean coach Park Hang-seo, who manages Vietnam, receives a red card after a continuous complaining on the officiating, but it spelled no effect for his Vietnamese boys, who’s defense was just too hard for Indonesia to crack.

It was the first men’s football gold medal for Vietnam as a unified country, as the country won the 1959 gold medal as South Vietnam, back when the games was known as the Southeast Asian Peninsular Games.
