Homegrown Pinay shines bright in London: How Filipina Katareena Roska took on World Scholar’s Cup Globals

La Salle Highschool Pasadena’s Academic Decathlon team “Trail Mix” were crowned overall champions at the recently concluded World Scholar’s Cup Global rounds in London, England.

The “Trailmix” team, a diverse mix of three students from Brazil, Italy and the Philippines bested other scholars that represented the 40 countries present.  

Homegrown Filipina and Tangentzine editor-in-chief Katareena Roska was the Philippine flag bearer in the parade of nations and garnered the sixth-highest individual score among hundreds of scholars that participated. She remains an integral part of the “Trail Mix” team in the debate and quiz bowl rounds were they also placed first overall in both categories.

The team is set to fly to Yale University this November 2023 to compete in the Tournament of Champions.

The World Scholar’s Cup is an academic competition that goes beyond traditional rote learning and embraces a holistic approach to knowledge. Divided into four main events, including Team Debate, Collaborative Writing, Scholar’s Bowl, and Scholar’s Challenge, the competition pushes students to think critically, communicate effectively, and work collaboratively.
