NEW YORK – Growing up in humble beginnings in Tampilisan, Zamboanga Del Norte, Jonas Sultan is used to life’s trials and tribulations.

In line with that narrative, his boxing career is about to take perhaps it toughest, fiercest test when he climbs the ring this Sunday at the Hulu theater inside the famed Madison Square Garden.

His opponent is an undefeated 25-year old warrior from Puerto Rico with an excellent record of 14 wins, all by knockout.

But Sultan, 29, ain’t no chopped liver, either. He flaunts a 17-5 slate with 11 stoppages and has a richer ring experience that includes a previous scrum with John Riel Casimero and a failed title attempt at dethroning reigning IBF super flyweight champion Jerwin Ancajas.

“Magandang laban ‘to. Nasa magandang kondisyon si Jonas,” said coach and trainer Joven Jimenez who oversaw Sultan’s camp in Los Angeles where Ancajas helped as sparring partner.

“He is ready to go. He had a great camp. Hopefully the stars will align,” said Junnie Navarro, who co-manages Sultan with Mike Valenzuela of the fames Zamboanga Valientes MLV.

Weigh-in for the ESPN card headlined by welterweight contenders Josue Vargas and Jose Cepeda will be Saturday afternoon at The Garden. (HDS)
