Karatedo: Macaalay gives bronze medal to PH after DQ win; Soriano, Orbon bag bronzes in women’s kumite

December 8, 2019 – Jayson Macaalay added another bronze medal in the tally for the Philippines as he triumphs in the under-60 kilogram kumite repechage event.

Macaalay trips Thailand’s Pooris Saiyasombat with a 4-2 win that ended in a disqualification of the latter.

Macaalay earlier defeated Myanmar’s Myint Maung Maung Hein with a convincing 3-0 win to set a date with the Thai.

In the early rounds, both karatekas seem to go toe-to-toe, scoring two points apiece in just five minutes.

It was then Macaalay’s continuous knees, punches, and kicks that prompted the referee to award the third point to the Filipino.

Macaalay continues to dominate Saiyasombat with a series of attacks leading him to get the fourth point.

The judge, however, gave Saiyasombat the hansoku decision after excessive contact with the Filipino, giving Macaalay the win.

Mae Soriano meanwhile gave the Philippines another bronze medal in the women’s under-55 kumite after defeating Cok Istri Satistyarani of Indonesia.

Both Soriano and Satistyarani enjoyed a close fight, going point after point for both sides.

It was Soriano’s final attack combo that gave her the win as well as the Philippines a bronze medal finish.

Joane Bernice Orbon also got a bronze medal after receiving a bye in the under-61 kilogram kumite.
