BROOKLYN — The climb back to the NBA’s elite level is going to be a steep one. But Ben Simmons is making a good effort at it. The three-time All-Star showed the form that made him the No.1 pick of the NBA draft, finishing 8 points, 6 rebounds and 9 assists in 29 minutes of preseason play Monday night at the Barclay’s Center.

Although Simmons’ all-around fare came in a losing effort after the Sixers snatched a 129-119. win, Simmons didn’t go home unhappy.

“I feel really good,” he told reporters of his performance.

While he concedes still lacks familiarity with the team’s sets and his teammates, he owned up to his eight turnovers. “I got to take care of the ball.”

During the course of his 29-minute performance, Simmons drew loud cheers of support from fans. He was asked about that during his post-game press conference.

“It’s a good feeling, you know, to be playing at a decent level now and have that support from fans from around the world, it’s a great feeling.”

When his journey has been like dealing wih injuries that sidelined him for most of last season, the 6-foot-10, 240-pound wing was introspective.

“I knew it would take a lot of work. The team allowed to take me the rehab into my hands. Work everyday. Didn’t miss a day of work, I think.”

Kelly Oubre Jr led the Sixers with 21 points while Tobias Harris and Paul Reed combined for 36. De’Anthony Melton added 15.

Brooklyn, which sat most of its starters including Mikal Bridges and Cam Johnson, was led by the 18 points of  Cam Thomas.
