LAS VEGAS – With the advent of the 2023-24 NBA season, the San Antonio Spurs have locked one of their core pieces of the future to a long-term deal.
As first reported by Adrian Wojnarowski, the once dynastic Spurs, who won five titles during the Tim Duncan era, signed Devin Vessell to a five-year rookie extension worth a massive $146 million.
Alongside No.1 overall pick Victor Wembanyama and point guard Tre Jones, formerly of Duke,, Vessell is expected to be part of the Spurs strong core for years to come.
After a starring role at Florida State University, Vessell was picked 11th overall by the Spurs in the 2020 NBA Draft. The 6-foot-5, 20-pound wing did not disappoint, averaging 18.5 points, 3.9 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game last season.
Although he was limited to just 38 games due to knee injuries, Vessell shot 38 percent from 3, ranking him in the Top 15 in the league with at least 150 attempts from beyond the arc.
With a 22-60 won-lost record, the Spurs finished last in the Western Conference standings and did not make the playoffs.
