MANILA — One Championship is pushing through with its 100th fight card, simply dubbed One: Century, at the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo on Sunday even though Typhoon Hagibis is set to hit Japan this weekend.
In a statement on Friday night, One CEO Chatri Sityodtong said he decided to push through with the event after consulting his leadership team.
“By early morning Sunday in Tokyo, the weather should be back to normal,” said Sityodtong, who clarified that they “made this decision with safety as the highest priority for our team, our athletes, and our fans.”
In a first for One, One: Century will be divided into two sessions, one in the morning and one in the evening.
The morning card, the first to be nationally televised in the United States, is expected to be heavily hit by “Hagibis” in terms of gate attendance as the typhoon is expected to make its biggest impact in Japan on Saturday night.
“Ticket holders who are unable to attend Part I of our event due to transportation or travel challenges will be granted a complete refund,” Sityodtong assured.
The morning part of One: Century will see Filipino mixed martial arts star Danny Kingad taking on American Demetrious Johnson in the final round of the One Flyweight Grand Prix.
The Formula One Group has postponed to Sunday the qualifying event of the Japanese Grand Prix, while two matches of the Rugby World Cup were postponed as well.
