MANILA – Video streaming platform Netflix announced on Tuesday that boxing legends Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather will face off again on Sept. 20 (PH time) in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The match will be broadcast live.
The match between the former world champions will take place inside The Sphere, marking the first time the indoor venue operated by the management of Madison Square Garden in New York City will hold a boxing showdown.
It was also confirmed that it will be an official pro fight, which means their records (Mayweather at 50-0, Pacquiao at 62-8-3 win-loss-draw) are on the line.
Pacquiao and Mayweather’s 12-round “Fight of the Century” for the unified world welterweight championship at MGM Grand Garden Arena, also in Las Vegas, on May 2, 2015 ended in unanimous decision in favor of the flamboyant American.
Pacquiao, now 47, said in a statement that he is happy fans will finally get a rematch.
“The fans have waited long enough — they deserve this rematch,” Pacquiao said. “I want Floyd to live with the one loss on his professional record and always remember who gave it to him.”
Pacquiao hinted at the announcement when he told reporters to wait for a big news during Monday’s partnership signing between his brainchild Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League and sports betting platform SportsPlus at Gameville Ball Park in Mandaluyong.
On the other hand, Mayweather, 49, vowed that he would get one again against Pacquiao.
“I already fought and beat Manny once. This time will be the same result,” Mayweather said in another statement.
Pacquiao and Mayweather are scheduled to play exhibition bouts against Ruslan Provodnikov and Mike Tyson, respectively, before their now anticipated rematch.
The Pacquiao- Provodnikov 10-rounder will be at Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas on April 18, while there are no specific details yet about the Mayweather-Tyson clash. (PNA)
