The Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters showcased their resilience and composure as they overcame a formidable second-half surge from Terrence Romeo and the San Miguel Beermen. The game witnessed Tyler Tio and Raoul Soyud step up with crucial plays in the closing minutes to secure a hard-fought 106-101 victory for the Fuel Masters at the Ynares Arena in Pasig City

Despite squandering a significant 17-point lead in the first half, Phoenix found themselves trailing by a slim margin with less than two minutes remaining. It was in this pressure-cooker situation that Soyud made a decisive defensive stop, blocking Rodney Brondial’s attempt. Phoenix quickly capitalized on the turnover, locating Tio who calmly sank a pivotal three-pointer from the right wing, catapulting Phoenix back into the lead at 102-101.

Not content with just reclaiming the advantage, the Fuel Masters demonstrated their defensive prowess in the subsequent play. JJ Alejandro showcased his court vision, delivering a precise bounce pass amidst the Beermen’s defensive efforts to find Soyud. With 26 seconds left on the clock, Soyud converted a clutch under-goal stab, granting his team a bit more breathing room at 103-101.

Phoenix’s victory was a collective effort, exemplified by the balanced scoring from their roster. Importantly, eight players reached double figures, led by Simon Camacho’s unexpected offensive output of 15 points, accompanied by eight rebounds. Tio made a notable contribution with 14 points, while Larry Muyang and RR Garcia added 11 points each. Soyud, Alejandro, Sean Manganti, and Kurt Lojera also chipped in with 10 points apiece.

This balanced scoring distribution proved pivotal in withstanding the fiery offensive display from Terrence Romeo, who showcased his best performance since returning from a series of injuries, amassing an impressive 27 points. Robbie Herndon also made a significant impact with 21 points, 13 of which came during the third quarter when San Miguel narrowed the gap to a mere three points (81-78). However, Phoenix responded emphatically, closing out the quarter strongly and reestablishing an 11-point lead (89-78) heading into the final frame.

Despite a valiant effort from San Miguel, led by Mo Tautuaa’s 10 fourth-quarter points, they fell short in their comeback bid. Even when they briefly regained the lead at 101-98 with 2:23 remaining, their hopes were ultimately dashed. Phoenix’s resolute defense held firm, and although San Miguel had opportunities to close the gap, both Robbie Herndon and Jericho Cruz failed to convert their three-point attempts in the closing moments, sealing the victory for the Fuel Masters.
