SAN JUAN CITY, Philippines–The Philippines scored its 23rd gold medal in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games after Monica Torres prevailed in the women’s duathlon race on Monday in Subic.
Torres, the heavy favorite to win it all as she is the reigning three-peat Powerman Asia Duathlon champion, aced the event as expected, clocking in at two hours, eight minutes, and 44 seconds.
Torres was way ahead of the pack when she crossed the finish line as the silver medalist, Thailand’s Pareeya Sonsem, came in at 2:11:18. Thi Phuong Nguyen of Vietnam bagged the bronze at the time of 2:14:20.
Torres will return to action on Thursday as she will compete in the mixed relay race.
