December 5, 2019 – Jylyn Nicanor nips a comeback victory to claim the women’s sabre gold in fencing at the World Trade Center.
The Filipino defeated Indonesian rival Diah Permatasari, 15-14, that saw eight deadlocks and five lead changes.
Permatasari led the early game with an 8-5 outing in the first bout, capped by a 3-0 run before the break.
Nicanor then scored four straight points to get her back into the lead 9-8, and eventually 14-all, thanks to the grit of Permatasari.
It was a video review that calls the game for Nicanor, as both teams seem to hit each other but with the Filipino going first.
“I was really nervous. I then only think about all of our sacrifices, and what will be lost if I did not pull the win,” Nicanor said about the final deadlock.
Tonpan Pokeaw of Thailand and Singapore’s Kar Yi Jolie Lee both claimed bronze after suffering defeats from Nicanor and Permatasari, respectively.
