Teofimo Lopez is bracing for a challenging face-off against Jamaine Ortiz on February 8 in Las Vegas, with their shared history dating back to their amateur days adding an extra layer of anticipation.
The 26-year-old WBO junior welterweight champion is mindful of Ortiz’s motivation to seek redemption for a past points loss nearly nine years ago.
The stakes are elevated as they headline an ESPN broadcast during Super Bowl week at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino’s Michelob ULTRA Arena.
Despite being the favored fighter to win, Lopez acknowledges Ortiz as a formidable opponent, praising his elusive style and technical prowess.
“Great fighter,” Lopez said in a media scrum, “You know, me and him faced each other back in the national Golden Gloves back in 2015, in the finals. So, I know I got a tough fight ahead of me. You know, it’s not a walkover. You know, this guy is very elusive. He’s a technician, like they say, so he gave Loma a run for his money. So, I gotta stay on my toes.”
Ortiz, a 27-year-old Worcester native, earned respect with a strong showing against Lomachenko in October 2022, despite ultimately losing. Both fighters are gearing up for a compelling clash, promising an intense showdown between two seasoned contenders in the boxing world.
