Fencing: Vietnam trio stage comeback, beats Thailand in men’s sabre

December 6, 2019 – Vietnam defies an early setback to defeat Thailand in the men’s sabre event of fencing at the World Trade Center.

The team of Nguyen Xuan Loi, Vu Thanh An, and Nguyen Van Quyet suffered to a slow start, scoring only three to Thailand’s 10.

Van Quyet trimmed the lead to three in the third bout but Ruangit Haekerd denies the Vietnamese to take the bout, 15-11.

Soravit Kitsiraboon enjoyed another big lead, downing Xuan Loi in the fourth, 20-14.

Despite sustaining an injury due to a clash, Voragun Srinualnad maintains the lead against Van Quet, but the lead is down to four, 25-21.

It was Vu who began a comeback and stole the sixth round, scoring nine while limiting Haekerd to just one, 26-30.

From there, the Vietnam trio never looked back and win the match 39-45 for the gold medal.

Singapore and the Philippines, meanwhile, took the bronze medal.

Vietnam moved past Philippines in the semis, 45-39, while Thailand escapes Singapore 45-42.
