Slaughter takes break from basketball

MANILA — Greg Slaughter announced on Saturday that he will take some time off following the end of his current contract with Ginebra to get better.

“Now that my contract has expired, I’ve decided to take a break to be able to work on myself in all aspects,” the seven-foot center said in a statement on his Instagram account.

The Barangay drafted Slaughter as the first overall pick of the 2013 PBA Draft, and he has been with them throughout the first six seasons of his career, winning four championships including this year’s Governors’ Cup title.

“It’s been a fun ride being with this team. I will forever be proud to have played for Ginebra, a dream of mine that came true,” he continued.

During Ginebra’s title run against Meralco in the finals, however, Slaughter only posted averages of 4.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, 0.8 block, 0.6 steal, and 0.2 assist a game, a stat line uncharacteristic of a former No. 1 pick.

That puts his free agency in an iffy state.

“I may not know what the future holds,” Slaughter rued

But he added, “One thing is for sure, the best is yet to come!” (PNA)
